Inside MORE THAN WORDS.
“I met Rob and his mother for lunch; we sat in a booth – me on one side and Rob and his mother on the other. Rob, who was gay, was in his early twenties with clear blue eyes and a weary expression. During our unremarkable conversation, Rob responded to everything I said with a dour expression. So, I decided on a different angle. ‘You know what I believe men with homosexual feelings really want? I believe they want to understand men, to feel accepted by men, to have buddies, to feel like one of the guys.’ Then I said, ‘Rob, I wonder what you would do if I were to move to your side of the booth and throw my arm across your shoulder.’ I now had his full attention. If a waiter had dropped a stack of dishes, I don’t believe Rob would have noticed; we were communicating.”
